On December 25 this year, in Palasari,
Abianbase, Tuka, Untal-untal, Blimbingsari and Dalung, the birth of Christ will be
commemmorated Balinese-style. Putu Wirata visited a number of these predominantly
Christian villages to find out about the history of the Christian religion in Bali.

We all have New Year's Eve memories,
some good, some bad, lots of indifferent ones. I have spent many an exhausting New Year's
Eve in Bali, braving traffic, rain sometimes, crowds always, searching for the ultimate
spot to celebrate the approaching year.full story |

The Origins of
Nusa Dua or...
Once upon a time, in the village of
Blahbatuh, there lived a peasant couple called Men Bekung and Pan Bekung. For many years,
they remained childless, hence their name Bekung (childless). But Men Bekung and Pan
Bekung were faithful Hindu followers, so they went to meditate and pray for a child in the
nearby temple of Kutri, the seat of the powerful Durga, the god Siwa's terrible consort.

Latter
Day Laksamana
In the Ramayana epic, Rama,
the prince, embodies goodness, mercy and dharma. To complement these qualities, his
younger brother, the loyal Laksamana personifies truth, faith, honesty and chivalry.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their upbringing as sons of the then still powerful Raja of
Karangasem, Anak Agung Made Djelantik and his elder brother, Gede, the Crown Prince,
adopted the personae and roles of Laksamana and Rama respectively.full story |

Slick and Cool in
Senggigi
The daytime streets of Senggigi, Lombok are hot and lazy. Many shops are closed for
siesta, tourists flock to the beaches to escape the heat, local youths survey the street
from atop motorcycles parked in the shade. In the midday heat everything is slow-moving
and calm. With the coolness of night, things start to stir a little. Tourists head to the
restaurants and cafes, and the Lombok youth venture in for a party. At night, the Senggigi
clubs are a magnet to revelers from Mataram and beyond.

Think Green
Spoil yourself and your
loved ones. Take some time in the holiday season to explore Bali's most beautiful
boutiques. Indulge in the quirky stylish treasures that abound there.Wakamaya, a
sanctuary by the sea
Just south of placid Sanur,
a narrow road winds through coconut groves and past sparsely spaced local dwellings before
it reaches a sanctuary on the edge a forest of mangroves. This is Waka Maya, the most
recent stroke of genius from the young Balinese designer and architect Ketut Siandana.
