KUPU-KUPU OBEROI

From Seminyak’s oldest hotel, The Oberoi, barely a promotional peep has been heard in the almost twenty years it has been nestled at the far end of Indonesia’s most famous beach. That is, until recently. When The Oberoi, Seminyak opened its Kupu Kupu Restaurant last November, it was intended as its first foray into promoting some of the hotel’s facilities to non-staying guests. “We envisage guests from hotels in the vicinity venturing here of an evening to try out Kupu Kupu,” explains Food and Beverage Manager Ilio, whose first job when he began at the hotel a year ago was to supervise the establishment of Kupu Kupu. Indeed, there is no reason why they shouldn’t do so. Kupu Kupu is a delightfully relaxed, breezy space where the ebb and flow of the ocean hums in diners ears as they enjoy fine dining in the comfort of cushioned bamboo armchairs. Kupu Kupu offers twin Continental and Asian menus, which change daily, allowing diners to choose from culinary delights that vary from the spicy sambals, soups and sates of the Orient to Caesar Salad and Smoked Salmon originating from the Western half of the globe. Servings are sufficiently plentiful for a choice of two entrees to satisfy a moderate hunger, especially if one is to leave room for Kupu Kupu’s delectable desserts. Snug beneath the frangipani trees at Seminyak’s Beach’s quiet end, Kupu Kupu’s refined menu makes the occasion of dining a very special one. Jalan Laksmana, Seminyak. Tel. (62-361) 730 361.

SPRINGS OF TEARS, SPRINGS OF FIRE

An anthology of poetry by renowned Indonesian painter and poet, Frans Nadjira - whose painting graced the cover of Bali Echo after his solo exhibition at the Four Seasons Resort’s Ganesha Gallery last year, has recently been published by Matamera and Yayasan Cak Denpasar. Entitled Springs of Fire, Springs of Tears , the anthology was translated by the Bali-based scholar of Indonesian literature, Tom Hunter. Hunter, who has translated a number of other Indonesian poets’ works, shows his adeptness here at capturing the soul of Nadjira’s poetry, and this anthology remains true to the poet’s celebrated ‘oral’ style.
