Dear Readers, In previous years, Bali Echo has celebrated the annual Festival of the Arts by featuring the history of the event and overviews of its highlights for that year. This year, Bali Echo has chosen a different kind of feature. Andre Sjahrezas cover story on contemporary Balinese theatre and Cok Sawitri and Arif Prasetyos piece on Balis own cafe-going traditions reveal some of the lesser-known corners of Balinese arts and culture. In this way, we hope that Bali Echo's 35th edition will serve as a perfect complement to the 20th Festival of the Arts. Having savoured the truly festive atmosphere at the pleasant, leafy Art Centre over June and July, and read Bali Echo from cover to cover, we are confident that visitors will leave the island with at least some of Balis many mysteries solved! As we go to print, Indonesia is experiencing some exciting changes. A fresh omelette could well be in the making, and unfortunately one of the sacrificial breakages has included the international surf world's golden egg, the Quiksilver Pro, which for the past four years has been held annually in East Java (see Home Grown). The Quiksilver Pro will, however, be held as usual in 1999. [main page] |
