A Region in transition

The end of 1999 will really signify the beginning of a new era for tourism in the West Nusa Tenggara region. Ichsannudin Ilham shares a positive perspective on the future of this area, as well as identifying some areas of concern...

With the December/January vacation season well and truly underway, the tourism business in West Nusa Tenggara is expected reap a steady dollar harvest. Issues of national concern will, of course, affect all areas of Indonesia, including this region, and this problem will inevitably become a source of "homework" that is not so light for the tourism industry to solve. But otherwise, it is possible to see plenty of positive ways ahead.

Many parties connected to tourism in Lombok, the region's most popular island, are optimistic. The local government of West Nusa Tenggara, for example, has identified that the participation of the Indonesian Government in the Sydney Travel Show held in the United States was at least a positive step towards recovery. Maintaining a presence at important travel exhibitions such as this, they believe, will eventually have an impact, despite the complex political problems that Indonesia has been experiencing.

According to the chief of the West Nusa Tenggara Tourism Administration, Machfud Achmad, tourism in Lombok cannot be connected to the political problems. "Tourism should be separated from political affairs. That is the common sense that will guarantee the success of the tourism business at this time, Machfud has said.

In the golden triangle
To accelerate the growth of tourism in Lombok and beyond, the local government of West Nusa Tenggara is directing tourism promotion and marketing to countries in the Northern American, Australasian, and Western European regions. Domestic promotion is directed to cities in Java and Batam. In an attempt to convince potential visitors of the attractions of Lombok as a tourist destination, the West Nusa Tenggara government is aiming to educate these people about the islands, particularly Lombok, so they can understand and appreciate the attractions of each island as a whole before they arrive.

The perseverance and fast development of tourism in this region can be attributed to a few different factors. Most importantly, the area is located in the center of the golden triangle of national tourism - Bali in the West, Tanah Toraja in the North, and Komodo Island in the East - three tourism resorts that have become well known all around the world. Sooner or later, one would expect that the place in the middle would also be easily able to penetrate the international market.

Secondly, the natural beauty of the area makes it an attractive choice, as it is able to boast mountainous retreats with dense forests. The Hutan Pusuk (Pusuk Forest), for example, in the Lombok Barat Regency, is a beautiful resort for tourists. In this resort, there are restaurants and villas in the middle of the forest, with a variety of different kinds of monkeys that can be teased into playing games. And, of course, the crisp and cool mountain climate attracts people for extended stays. In Tanjung resort, in Northwest Lombok, the previously dry and infertile land has been transformed into lush cashew forest. The other National Parks of Rinjani Mountain also hide thousands of naturally beautiful features.

Meanwhile, on the coastal scene, Lombok is rimmed by a number of beautiful beaches. Senggigi Beach, Kuta Beach in western Lombok, and the islands off the west of Lombok - namely Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air - are all stunning beaches that are becoming popular with tourists. In this region, there is also an underwater resort which is known for its blue coral.

A variety of places of cultural and historical interest can also be found in the urban areas. The Van Ham Grave in Karang Jangkong and Mayura Park and Meru Temple in the Cakranegara District are two of these places of interst. Then there is Loang Balok Grave in Tanjung Karang in the Ampenan District, Saleh Sungkar Grave in Saleh Sungkar Street Ampenan, ketak handicrafts in Sayang-Sayang, and the Rinjani Hand Woven centre in Cakranegara, to name but a few more.
